The Akaroa Region

Akaroa has a reputation as one of New Zealand’s earliest settlements and to this day remains one of the best preserved towns. It is the only town in New Zealand that the French tried to settle. The British soon outnumbered them but every year Akaroa celebrates its French origins.

As you make your way around the harbour to Akaroa you will pass by the smaller settlements on the shores of the harbour. Beyond Akaroa is a small settlement named Onuku. There is a Marae at Onuku and one of the countries most beautiful historic churches over looks the water.

With Christchurch only one hour’s drive over the hill, Akaroa is an extremely popular escape from city life. Come for the weekend or stay for a week, Akaroa offers a unique coastal escape. Unwind and step back in time as the history and character of the town mixed with harbour views takes over.
